Maximise your AdSense earnings

Google AdSense is the most successful, widespread advertising network on the internet. Popular with advertisers and publishers alike, AdSense offers the potential to earn direct income, proportional to the number of visitors they receive.

As an experienced AdSense publisher, here are my most important tips to maximise your AdSense earnings, and create a long term revenue stream.

Be sensible

To keep the AdSense network valuable, Google is understandably strict with publishers who break their terms. Be sure to thoroughly read the AdSense publisher guidelines, and keep up to date with any changes. Always follow them, and don't push the boundaries.

Content is king

To make the most out of AdSense, you need valuable, unique content. There are no shortcuts.

Creating valuable content shouldn't be a painful process, and if it is you're approaching it wrongly. Write about what you know best, and the words will flow. Think about your hobbies, and what advice you can offer to others, and decide on a subject area for your website.

Optimise for real people

Be conscious of search engine optimisation as you create content, but you should always focus on developing the best user experience possible. Don't cram the page full of adverts, or write recommendations for products you've never tried.

Don't try to target a high-earning niche unless that's where your knowledge lies. Lower earning niches are less competitive so easier to enter. Genuine knowledge in that niche will let you create a far more valuable resource, providing regular income for the long term.

Advert placement

With significant visitor numbers, AdSense earnings can be optimised by perfecting advert placement. Although it varies, adverts will generally perform best above the fold, so a user doesn't have to scroll down.

Adverts often perform best on the centre of the page, and to the left of the main content. The right and base of the page typically receives little attention, so won't receive a high click through rate.
